AFSCME members around the country work hard to keep our families and communities safe – patrolling our streets, securing our airports and enforcing our laws. As uniformed officers and civilian law enforcement workers in states, counties and cities, at educational institutions and other areas, we proudly serve and protect every day.

AFSCME's Commitment to Law Enforcement

AFSCME is committed to servicing Law Enforcement officers around the country. Currently, AFSCME represents over 100,000 public safety personnel including police, correction, fire and EMS workers. James E. Howell, former Council 15 Executive Director, was recently named to the position of Assistant Director of Law Enforcement. Howell is a retired police officer from the City of New Haven, CT and will work to expand AFSCME's sworn police officer ranks. Howell will be working closely with the legislative department and lobbying for HR 413: Public Safety Employer-Employee Cooperation Act of 2009 which will provide collective bargaining rights for public safety officers.

If you have any questions or comments please contact James Howell at JHowell@afscme.org.
