Statement of AFSCME International President Gerald W. McEntee on the House Health Care Reform Bill

“We are ramping up our grassroots activities.”

— “The bill presented today by the House leadership provides a uniquely American solution to the health care crisis. It builds on what works best in our health care system while protecting middle class Americans from an unnecessary tax increase on the health benefits they fought hard to earn. We will mobilize our members around the country to pass this bill. Let’s get this done now. Congress needs to get this bill on President Obama’s desk as quickly as possible. We are ramping up our grassroots activities and deploying staff in critically important states. We are going to fight a concerted ground war to get the votes we need on Capitol Hill to make reform happen.”

AFSCME’s 1.6 million members provide the vital services that make America happen. With members in hundreds of different occupations – from nurses to corrections officers, child care providers to sanitation workers – AFSCME advocates for fairness in the workplace, excellence in public services and prosperity and opportunity for all working families.
