2007 AFSCME State Legislative Agenda

Even with improved budget conditions, states face difficulty paying for the growing cost of providing education, health care and other public needs.  This structural deficit means states and local governments are still cutting vital services.  State and local tax systems need to be updated to reflect 21st Century economic realities and make them more fair. On the cost side of the equation, “Sensible Solutions for State Budgets” addresses hidden waste and inefficiency in government – in areas like contracting, tax breaks and development subsidies.  States can also make reforms to their health care systems to cut costs and expand coverage.
